How to Apply for a Teaching Position in DPS
Calling all educators - teachers, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and therapists!
Denver Public Schools uses a continual hiring cycle. This means that following budget approval, schools hire for educator positions for the next school year starting mid-February and ongoing through the entire school year on an as-needed basis.
2010-11 Teacher Staffing

The new hire process for teachers and Special Service Providers is provided below:
- DPS then screens applications against the "No Child Left Behind" requirements and position criteria to determine the most suitable candidates for the position.
- If you are a candidate, you will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews take place at the school where the vacancy exists.
- Once a decision is made, the school principal will make the employment offer and recommend a candidate for hire.
- Written notification from DPS HR will detail next steps for the candidate to complete a background check, collect and verify qualifications, and complete new hire forms.
If you are applying for one of the positions below, follow the instructions given:
- Bilingual (ELA-S) Teacher: Once you have been contacted for possible employment, you are required to successfully pass the Spanish Language Proficiency Test or other approved test. Information will be provided to you through Human Resources.
Not a teacher or special services provider? Read below and Apply for a Non-Teaching Position
- Bilingual (ELA-S) Paraprofessional: Upon recommendation for hire, you are required to successfully pass the bilingual paraprofessional test. In addition, you are required to pass the WorkKeys Test or demonstrate proof of completion through college transcripts of at least 48 semester hours of accredited college credit or an AA degree or higher. - Paraprofessional: Upon recommendation for hire, you are required to pass the WorkKeys Test or demonstrate proof of completion through college transcripts of at least 48 semester hours of accredited college credit or an AA degree or higher. - Guest (Substitute) Teacher: To work as a guest (substitute) teacher in DPS, you must have a Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Teaching License, 5-Year Substitute Authorization, or 3-Year Substitute Authorization. Learn more here.
- Charter School Positions: Charter School teaching positions are not administered through DPS Human Resources. For current positions that have been forwarded for posting, click here.
At the point of interview, you may be required to provide:
- Copies of licenses and/or certifications (if required for position)
- Official transcripts of all college/university work completed with degree posted (if required for position)
- List of three (3) professional references and/or three (3) letters of reference
Note: Because you will be required to provide official transcripts and copies of licenses, certifications, and references at the time of your interview, it is recommended that you obtain all necessary documents now. You will be notified of all documentation needed when an interview is scheduled.
